"Ikarus Jackson, the new boy in school, is outcast because he has wings,
but his resilient spirit inspires one girl to speak up for him." (from Amazon.com)
I used this with my advisory group right away at the beginning of the year. It's a great lesson about individuality as well as supporting others. It was received well by my 8th graders.
This is such a cool book! It is fairly short, but has a lot going on. The illustrations remind me of Ezra Jack Keats' collages. My favorite page is when the little girl works up the courage to defend Ikarus and his wings.
